BMW Motorrad: New Paint Shop in Berlin sets new standards

Innovative technologies for maximum resource efficiency

BMW Motorrad has reached a milestone in the development of future-oriented motorcycle production with the opening of a new, state-of-the-art Paint Shop at the BMW Group Plant Berlin. With an investment volume of over 50 million euros, this represents the largest single investment by BMW AG in motorcycle manufacturing since the construction of the Logistics Center at the Berlin site in 2015.

The new Paint Shop covers an area of around 4,300 square metres, has a capacity of up to 1.3 million components per year, and enables a high variety of around 90 components in 20 colours. The fully automated painting process takes place every 57 seconds using high-precision painting robots. “With the new Paint Shop, we are investing strategically in the future of our site. It combines state-of-the-art production technology with a clear focus on resource efficiency,” says Helmut Schramm, Head of Production BMW Motorrad.

Significant savings in resources and emissions

The savings are achieved through the use of innovative technologies. Dry separation of paint overspray is expected to reduce water consumption by around 86 per cent and the amount of waste for disposal by approximately 89 per cent compared to the existing system. The paint mist is captured by special filters rather than being bound with water as before, thereby completely eliminating the production of wet paint sludge.

Through the recirculation operation of the paint booths, the recovery ot heat from the system technology, and the electrically powered heating of the drying systems, energy consumption is expected to be reduced by around 47 per cent. Overall, CO₂ emissions can be reduced by around 85 per cent compared to the existing paint shop. Since 2020, the BMW Group has sourced all external electricity for its global production sites, including the Berlin plant, from renewable energy sources.

Kai Wegner, Governing Mayor of Berlin: “This investment is a clear commitment by the BMW Group to Berlin as a business location and to the future of industrial value creation in our city. This decision will safeguard jobs and preserve vital expertise in Berlin.”
