Ongoing Transition to E-Mobility in Munich

Starting at the end of 2027, the BMW Group Plant in Munich will exclusively produce all-electric models.

Munich: The BMW Group Plant in Munich will not only produce the limousines of the Neue Klasse from 2026 – just one year later, the plant will exclusively manufacture fully electric models, making Munich the first location of the BMW Group that will have successfully completed the transformation to e-mobility by the end of 2027. “The Munich plant is an excellent example of our adaptability. We are investing 650 million euros here and will start producing exclusively fully electric vehicles at our main plant from the end of 2027,” explains Milan Nedeljković, Head of Production at the BMW AG. In 2023, a production record was achieved with six fully electric models, highlighting the innovative capabilities of the plant. A cornerstone for the new beginning: The Munich plant represents a comprehensive transformation that takes place concurrently with the ongoing production of approximately 1,000 vehicles per day.

Cars with combustion engines will be discontinued at the Munich plant from 2027

The BMW Group Plant in Munich embodies a seamless transition into the era of electromobility. In 2015, the first plug-in hybrid models of the BMW 3 Series were manufactured on the same assembly line as combustion engine vehicles. Since 2021, the BMW i4, the first fully electric vehicle, is also produced on the same production line. Today, already every second vehicle produced daily features a fully electric drive. The production of the Neue Klasse will commence in 2026 at the Munich plant, initially running in parallel with the production of current models. From the end of 2027, the plant will become the first existing location in the global production network to exclusively manufacture fully electric vehicles after undergoing the necessary transformation.

Spaces for electromobility are created at the Munich location

In its more than 100-year history, the BMW Group Plant in Munich has consistently reinvented itself and adapted to current changes. The successful introduction of the Neue Klasse in the 1960s is one of the most notable milestones in the company’s history. Currently, several major construction projects are underway simultaneously at the Munich plant, marking a significant turning point and paving the way for the launch of the Neue Klasse from 2026. The investment of 650 million euros includes four buildings, including a new vehicle assembly with logistics areas and a new body shop. To create the necessary room in the limited plant space, the longstanding engine production has been relocated to the Hams Hall site in the United Kingdom and Steyr in Austria after around 70 years at the main plant.

The current reconstruction of the BMW Group Plant in Munich, as in the 1960s and all subsequent changes, is taking place during ongoing production operations. Regardless of the construction activities, nearly 1,000 vehicles are produced daily, including the BMW 3 Series and the BMW i4. With the restructuring of the plant, the BMW Group not only invests in the long term future of the Munich plant but also in Bavaria as an industrial hub.

BMW iFACTORY: Digital transformation in the BMW Group Plants

The BMW iFACTORY principles ensure the highest flexibility, excellent processes, and outstanding integration capabilities at all BMW Group locations, representing the exceptional production competence of the entire manufacturing network. A crucial element of the iFactory is the comprehensive digitisation of the plants, aimed at optimising processes and supporting employees in their work. During the tours at the BMW Welt, you will gain further insights into BMW iFACTORY and automotive production at the Munich location. Another aspect of the BMW iFactory is LEAN production, emphasising highly flexible and efficient work: Different engines are built on a single production line in the BMW locations Berlin, Leipzig, and Oxford, optimising production in an environmentally friendly manner. You can find tickets for the Berlin, Leipzig and Oxford plant tours in our ticket shop.
